“But the high priests and elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to demand that Jesus be put to death.” – Mat 27:20Russell has written a beautiful song on the Nails album entitled “I Am Barrabus”. The first verse describes the setting of the release of Barrabus, and condemnation of my Savior. As Locust Ridge sang the words of the song, I could see the crowd screaming for the blood of Jesus while Barrabus stumbled away from the judgement seat a little baffled by what had taken place. These same people that had sentenced Barrabus to death were now asking for his release. It was always God’s plan to provide an everlasting sacrifice for our sins through the cross. I would like to think these events had enough of an impact on his life to cause Barrabus to change his ways and repent for his sins.
Much like Barrabus, my sins had condemed me to die. However, Jesus took my place and paid my sin debt. While I can never be worthy of such a gift, by asking Christ into my heart, and accepting him as my Lord, I have the promise of eternal life. “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” – Romans 6:23
“I Am Barrabus” was the inspiration for the drawing. It is my interpretation of how the scene might have looked over 2000 years ago through the eyes of Barrabus after being released. Over the guard’s right shoulder, the high priest calls for the death of Jesus, while Pilate stands helpless, unable to change God’s divine plan.
